FierceContentManagement – New Igloo Uses Responsive Design To Display Documents On Any Device

Ron Miller, editor for FierceContentManagement, recently covers Igloo’s latest product release, Scone.

At the heart of the upgrade is a new document preview engine that allows users to upload and share documents on the platform. When people access the documents instead of downloading the document to whatever devices, they are using, the system displays a preview of it and adjusts automatically for the size of the device.

The system provides a social stream for commenting on the document in line with the document itself, but the document is never live, making it a more secure way to share documents. There are limitations however to this approach since sometimes editing in real time is a useful exercise and while this system is designed for communication about the document, it doesn’t appear to allow live document editing.

When you download the document, you get a PDF, rather than whatever format the document might have been in originally. It’s great that you don’t have to worry about document formats or devices because just about everyone has the ability to read a pdf, but it could place limitations on editing depending on the pdf tool you have on the device.

Igloo Senior VP Andrew Dixon says today’s workforce doesn’t want to be confined when it comes to doing work and businesses need to provide tools that enable them to work in whatever fashion they choose. “We work everywhere, using the device we have with us–whether it’s a laptop, a tablet, or a phone. With responsive design and enhanced document preview, you can work from anywhere without worrying if you downloaded the latest version of the file or if your device can only open specific file formats. And with enterprise-grade security, your files are safe and duplication is minimized,” Dixon said in a statement.

In addition, the update, known as Scone (taking a page from the Android food-name convention), offers support for HTML5 video and a new analytics dashboard to give administrators insight into social interactions across the platform.

The update is available in Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) Play and the Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) App Store. Current users can get the update free of charge. If you want to try Igloo, it is available for free for up to 10 users.
